We have created a tradition of making a quilt for each new baby, for weddings, and occasionally for other special occasions. It is a secret and surprise (but it's been going on so long now that it's not very unexpected!) For baby quilts, we choose a theme - circles or water or wildlife or sky or something similar and a backing colour. People volunteer to make a square, and we have a sewing together day. Seeing it come together is amazing.

For wedding quilts, we create a queen-bed sized template with a line drawing - a tree is a popular theme. Then we cut it up into squares and each person takes one to make, adding their own elaborations of pixies and creatures etc. On the sewing together day, we rejoin all the pieces.
